Smart Ventilation System

Ventilation system for cold environment

Project at a Glance

A smart device was designed specially to address the cold environments where the conservation of the heat energy is important during the winters. The device was able to monitor the air quality and control the airflow within close boundaries. The balance is maintained between the cold air from outside and the heat inside the building as well as in the caravans.

Technology Selection

After conducting extensive research on various technology stacks we decided to use C/C++ for firmware programming and create the GUI of the product using C#. The Framework used is Atmel Software Framework (ASF). For communication, we used Bluetooth, I2C, SPI, USB, HID, LIN. The Sensors which we used are pressure, temperature, air quality and CO2.

THE CHALLENGE

  • A smart vent can be quite pricey at first, with a starter kit costing around $200 and other vents costing upwards of $600.
  • It also requires the use of a smart thermostat in order to function properly.
  • If the air is exchanged more frequently than necessary, it causes overdrying and wastes energy.

SOLUTION IMPLEMENTATION

Intelligent algorithms were developed and logics were applied programmatically. These algorithms were used to control the airflow in order to maintain the balance between the airflows. Our main focus was to work on the electronics and the firmware part throughout this project.
